Ian Somerhalder reveals which of the Vampire Diaries couples he felt was 'a little forced'
If Ian Somerhalder had his way, one of The Vampire Diaries' couples would never have existed.
Somerhalder, 46, appeared on Hot Ones Versus on Tuesday, March 4, alongside Brothers Bond Bourbon co-founder and former The Vampire Diaries castmate Paul Wesley. Somerhalder played Damon Salvatore in the series, while Wesley, 42, played his brother Stefan.
In the episode, in which the two interviewed one another over spicy chicken wings, Somerhalder encouraged Wesley to expose a storyline that he felt "should've never made it out of the writer's room."
After Wesley agreed "it was cute," Somerhalder said that it worked because "she's pretty and you're pretty."
The spooky series aired for eight seasons, from 2009 to 2017. Elena Gilbert (Dobrev) was the series' central character, who was first captivated with Stefan before developing emotions for Damon, resulting in a love triangle.
When Dobrev, 36, startled fans by departing from the show after six seasons in 2015, the character arcs changed.
"Everyone in our family and the vampire community had known for a few years that this would be my final season. It was only the fans that were astonished, but the fans are also like family to us," Dobrev told PEOPLE in a May 2015 interview.
"That's why we wanted to include them and why we told them in advance - we didn't want to make anyone angry, we wanted to include them in the last little journey, this awesome ride that we're going on together," she wrote.

Following her departure, the show continued for two more seasons, with Stefan and Caroline eventually marrying.
Somerhalder has retired from acting, while Wesley reprises his role as James T. Kirk in Paramount+'s Star Trek: Brave New Worlds.
