‘Women wearing tight clothing more prone to getting varicose veins’
Lucknow: Women are more likely to develop varicose veins — twisted, enlarged, and visible veins, mostly found in the legs. These veins can cause pain, heaviness, and itching, often triggered by hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause.
This was highlighted by experts at the launch of a dedicated Varicose Vein Clinic at Medanta Hospital on Friday.
Dr Rohit Agrawal from the clinic explained that if not treated in time, varicose veins can lead to serious complications. He said that pregnant women are especially at risk due to increased blood volume and pressure on the leg veins. A family history of varicose veins can further raise the chances of developing the condition.
He said that the newly launched clinic will use advanced Doppler ultrasound to diagnose and treat varicose veins. This technology provides a detailed image of blood flow in the veins, helping doctors plan effective treatment.
Dr Rakesh Kapoor, director of the hospital, added that people who sit or stand for long hours, are overweight, or wear tight clothing around the legs or waist are more prone to varicose veins. He also warned that lack of exercise and smoking can worsen the condition.
