The Pittsburgh Steelers are seemingly playing the waiting game with Aaron Rodgers, and according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, there’s a strong reason for their patience. Fowler suggests that the only logical explanation for Pittsburgh's reluctance to sign another quarterback is that Rodgers has, in some form, guaranteed them that he will eventually join.
Aaron Rodgers’ rumored promise to Mike Tomlin hints at potential Steelers connection
“The Pittsburgh Steelers remain optimistic, and they are willing to wait. In fact, I’ve talked to several people in the quarterback market, including in and around Russell Wilson’s free agency, who just figure that the Steelers must have gotten some sort of loose assurance on Rodgers at some point that he’s going to play there,” Fowler revealed.
Rodgers, who remains one of the most enigmatic figures in the league, has not officially committed to any team yet. However, with Pittsburgh keeping its options open and refraining from making moves on other quarterbacks, there is growing belief that a deal is quietly in place.

While Pittsburgh appears to be Rodgers’ likely landing spot, there is speculation that he is also keeping an eye on Minnesota. Reports suggest that Rodgers might be waiting to see if the Vikings lose confidence in rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Should Minnesota hesitate on McCarthy, Rodgers could view the Vikings as a more competitive Super Bowl-ready destination.
Despite the whispers about Minnesota, Fowler remains convinced that Pittsburgh would not have been this patient without some degree of certainty.
“Based on everything I’m hearing, they are willing to wait this out. They believe that Rodgers must have some sort of assurance from the Steelers, or vice versa, that they could end up together. They’ve already talked contract potential parameters. He visited with the team. It appears that nothing is imminent right now. You can expect the unpredictable with Aaron Rodgers,” Fowler emphasized.
"Aaron Rodgers Loves Everything About The Steelers" - AJ Hawk | The Pat McAfee Show
Adding fuel to the speculation, former teammate A.J. Hawk shared insights into Rodgers’ admiration for Pittsburgh. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Hawk stated, “Well, I do know that he actually really likes all the Pittsburgh staff. He loves the staff, the front office, everything about Pittsburgh. The people there, that’s what makes the Steelers, the Steelers, don’t you think? From the top, down, I think he definitely loves all them.”
The contract is ready, but aaron Rodgers is still hesitating
One of the more intriguing details of this saga is that the contract parameters between Rodgers and Pittsburgh have reportedly been in place for weeks. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero disclosed that Rodgers essentially invited himself to a meeting with the Steelers’ coaching staff.
“Aaron basically invited himself on a visit late last week. He was in the building for several hours, he watched tape with the coaches,” Pelissero shared on the Jim Rome Show.
While the structure of the deal is seemingly not a problem, Rodgers has yet to give his final commitment. Pelissero continued, “This deal has been in place contract-wise for weeks. They’ve discussed parameters. This is not going to be a financial issue at all for Aaron Rodgers. If it gets done, it’s going to be a one-year deal.”
Despite the clear interest from Pittsburgh, the delay in Rodgers’ decision is puzzling to many, including ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“I don’t see too many free agents who go visit a team for six hours, think about something,” Schefter commented. “What’s the question? What’s the issue? They want you. You don’t want them? Clearly, you have questions. I don’t know if that’s playing for that team, living in that city, playing football in general. There’s something that’s holding you back because they want him.”
A decision in the waiting room: Will Rodgers finally choose Pittsburgh?
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk believes that Rodgers signing with Pittsburgh is inevitable. However, when that decision will be made remains uncertain. Florio speculated that Rodgers could make his announcement during Pat McAfee’s “Big Night AHT” event on April 9 in Pittsburgh, given his long-standing connection with McAfee’s show.
If Rodgers doesn’t make a decision by then, April 21 could serve as another deadline, as that’s when the Steelers begin their offseason workouts.
