The Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday was all about McLaren, which registered its first win in Bahrain. It got not one but two spots on the podium, with Oscar Piastri winning the race and his teammate Lando Norris beating all odds to gain the third spot. Mercedes’ George Russell successfully defended his second spot on the podium after starting from the same position.
Lando Norris steals third spot from Charles Leclerc
Lando Norris proved his McLaren was—and will continue to be—the fastest by stealing the third spot on the podium from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who tried to maintain his pace after starting from the third position. Starting from sixth, Norris made quite an effort to move ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari to reach position four, and then passed Leclerc too. Norris looked dejected on Saturday after coming sixth in qualifying and had said that he didn’t think of winning the final race but would possibly come second, as Piastri was going to be on top.
Hamilton, who holds the record for the most wins at the Bahrain International Circuit—five victories in total—had reduced his chances of winning this year by ranking ninth in qualifying. He did gain quite a few positions in the Sunday final but couldn’t do any better than finishing fifth.
Max Verstappen came sixth after starting from the seventh position. He seemed to be struggling with his Red Bull at the Bahrain International Circuit, as his two pit stops looked slower than usual.
The race ended midway for Carlos Sainz, whose Williams car suffered serious damage after a clash with Yuki Tsunoda’s Red Bull. The car also left debris on the track, bringing out the safety car.
