Chinese government-linked hackers are targeting senior leaders in the Republican and Democratic parties, including Eric Trump and Jared Kushner, in a large-scale cyber-espionage campaign, according to US officials, CNN reported.
The hackers are reportedly accessing calls and text data from multiple targets, with dozens of individuals potentially affected. This campaign also targets former President Donald Trump, his running mate JD Vance, and members linked to the Harris-Walz campaign.
Prominent Democrats, including the staff of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, are also among the targets. The hacking situation was described as "way worse than the public knows," per sources familiar with the intelligence.
FBI notifications are being sent to those affected, and investigations are ongoing to understand the full impact. The New York Times first reported that Eric Trump and Kushner were among those targeted.
The breaches occurred at telecom firms AT&T, Lumen, and Verizon, and are considered one of the most significant national security hacks in recent history, more serious than initially reported, CNN stated.
This revelation coincides with an important FBI investigation into the hacking affecting both Trump and Harris campaigns, taking place just before the upcoming election on November 5.
While the hackers do not seem to be trying to influence the election, they are gathering intelligence on private communications of key officials from both parties, which could interest Beijing. Investigators believe the hackers may also be seeking sensitive national security information, including details about wiretap warrant requests by the Justice Department, according to CNN.
