AP sees 1L more male deaths than female
Visakhapatnam: A significant gender disparity emerges from the 2021 civil registration system dataof Union govt, with male deaths considerably outnumbering female deaths in Andhra Pradesh. Out of the 5.6 lakh reported deaths in 2021, 3.3 lakh were among males compared to only 2.3 lakh females – a striking difference exceeding one lakh. This imbalance is evident across both rural and urban settings—rural areas recorded 1.9 lakh male deaths versus 1.4 lakh female deaths, while urban regions reported 1.3 lakh male deaths against 87,244 female deaths. The gap is even more pronounced in specific age groups. Among those aged between 35 and 44, 47,460 males died compared to 14,286 females. In the 25–34 age bracket, 16,231 male deaths were documented against 6,775 female deaths. And for the 15–24 age group, 5,497 males and 3,388 females lost their lives. Even within the 45–54 cohort, male deaths at 50,526 significantly outnumbered 29,182 female deaths, marking an approximate 40% difference. Experts argue that this heightened male mortality, especially among middle-aged groups, warrants further epidemiological investigation into potential causes—such as occupational stress and financial pressures—that may contribute to lifestyle-related disorders like hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndrome and consequent deaths. They also suggest that the govt examine the role of Covid-19, which was at its peak in 2021, in the increased mortality among males during that period.Despite these concerning mortality trends, AP stands out as one of the few states in India achieving around 90% registration of both births and deaths within 21 days, in line with the guidelines. In 2021, state recorded 7.4 lakh births, of which 6.6 lakh were registered within the prescribed timeframe, attaining an 89.6% rate of prompt reporting.
