Coimbatore collector directs educational institutions to make RWH systems functional before June

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore district collector on Saturday directed all educational institutions to submit a compliance report on rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems on the campuses by May 20 and make RWH systems functional before the arrival of monsoon in June.
Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar on Saturday chaired a district-level meeting to discuss the status of RWH systems. Representatives of schools and colleges in the district and NGOs attended the meeting.
The meeting was convened in the wake of a report that more than 450 taluks in Tamil Nadu have over-exploited the groundwater table. In Coimbatore district, Annur, Periyanaickenpalayam, Singanallur and Pollachi have been listed under this category.
According to a survey conducted by an NGO in rural areas, it has been identified that many rainwater harvesting systems and borewells, predominantly those under government properties, were defunct. A simultaneous survey being carried out by the district in collaboration with the corporation has identified that major educational institutions in the district lack rainwater harvesting systems.
In a measure to address this issue and streamline water resources, the district administration convened the meeting with the representatives of educational institutions.
