Apple is preparing a major redesign of its controversial Magic Mouse, addressing long-standing user complaints about ergonomics and charging functionality, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter.
The design team, per Gurman, has been developing prototypes of a reimagined mouse that promises to be more modern and user-friendly. Most critically, the redesign aims to resolve the much-maligned charging port placement, which currently requires users to flip the mouse upside down to charge, rendering it unusable during power-up.
Gurman, in his newsletter, indicate the new mouse could feature a more ergonomic design that departs significantly from the current ultra-flat model introduced in 2009. While specific details remain scarce, the prototypes suggest Apple is seriously reconsidering the mouse's form factor to improve user comfort and functionality.
The redesign is said to be still in early stages, Gurman suggests that it’s still 12 to 18 months away—potentially landing in mid-2026. This means the current USB-C version of the Magic Mouse will continue to be the primary offering for the near future.
Apple has made minimal changes to the Magic Mouse over the past decade, with updates primarily involving battery technology and port connections. The upcoming redesign represents the most significant potential overhaul since the mouse's original introduction.
